Después de más de 10 años bailando me despido de una de las experiencias que más aprendizajes me ha dado y con la que más he logrado crecer como persona: dar clases de baile. El estilo con el que siempre me he identificado es el jazz y tuve la suerte de poder compartir mis habilidades con otras personas. Para mí, al igual que para cualquier bailarín, bailar es una forma de expresión. El baile fue mi arte, mi deporte y mi terapia.

After 10 years dancing, I'm forced to say goodbye to one of the most amazing opportunities I've ever had: giving dance lessons. I'm grateful for everything I've learned and for the way this experience shaped me. (Keep reading for more details on the whole experience and many pictures.)
Paciencia ante todo... / Patience... lots of patience.
Hice esto durante 3 años y aprendí que representa mucho más que pararse frente un espejo y moverte. Se necesita dedicación y es más complicado de lo que parece. Requiere que uno se involucre con cada uno de los alumnos para mantenerlos motivados. (especialmente porque son niños pequeños y pierden la concentración en segundos.) Es asegurarte de que cada clase sea un reto con nuevas coreografías y elementos diferentes, pero sin dejar de practicar lo aprendido en clases pasadas. Es lograr un balance entre convivencia y trabajo en equipo porque sorprendentemente también tienes que cuidar la manera en que se relacionan los alumnos y en ocasiones, también toca ser mediador de conflictos.

After doing this for more than 3 years I can say teaching a dance class is so much more than just standing in front of a mirror moving around hoping the students will follow. It requires energy, passion, and patience (lots of patience). It's a bit harder than it seems. You need to get involved with each of the students and work with them in order to keep them motivated (especially when they are little because they get distracted with everything). I had to make sure each class represented a challenge by learning new tricks and choreographies, but I also had to make sure they kept practicing what we had learned in past classes. Like everything, you need to learn how to perfectly balance things and time.
Another very important fact was keeping order and peace during class, and surprisingly between students too. Been the teacher also represents being the authority and unfortunately the arguing solver too.
¿Cómo comencé a dar clases? / How it all started
Algunas personas me preguntaban cómo es que comencé a dar clases y la verdad fue algo que sí me imaginé cuando era chiquita pero nunca busqué. Hay oportunidades que tan sólo llegan a nosotros y es bueno aprovecharlas.
Comencé en D'granda Studio (Silvia center) supliendo clases. En una ocasión una maestra se tuvo que ir y me tomaron en cuenta para ocupar su lugar, por lo que así comencé a dar clases a mis 15 años a niños entre 4 a 9 años. (Sigo sin saber como me las arreglaba para hacerlo.)

Many people ask me how did I start teaching jazz classes and the truth is, it was an opportunity that reached out to me and I couldn't deny it. It was something I had thought about when I was little but never really worked for it.
I started teaching where I took classes: D'granda Studio or also known as Silvia Center. First I started as a substitute when one of the teachers wasn't able to attend. Unfortunately, one really talented teacher had to quit which meant someone needed to take her place. And basically, that is how I started teaching a 4 to 9 years old group when I was only 15. (Yep, I don't know how I did it either.)
Mi segundo trabajo / My second job
Dos años después un 1ero de enero recibí una llamada de Mukti Studio invitándome a trabajar con ellas. Acepté principalmente porque lo consideré una señal de buena suerte. Primer día del año y yo tenía una segunda oportunidad de compartir lo que más me apasiona. Dar clases aquí resultó completamente distinto ya que era un grupo de niñas mucho más grandes, pero por supuesto no me arrepiento ni un segundo y me hubiera encantado haber continuado por mucho tiempo más.
En ambos lugares tuve alumnos que me marcaron y me inspiraron a ir todos los días a dar clases. No es lo mismo tomar una clase que darla y a final de cuentas creo que es mejor dar que recibir. Sin duda es una de las experiencias más completas que he vivido. Representó mucho más que solo enseñar a bailar y dar vueltas. Llegué a ser diseñadora de vestuarios, mejor amiga de mis alumnos, directora de teatro e incluso DJ ( porque alguien tenía que juntar las canciones).
Aunque a veces las cosas buenas se acaban, siempre estaré agradecida por esta etapa y espero que tan sólo sea una pausa y no el final.

Two years after on a January 1st I got a call from Mukti Studio inviting me to work with them. I accepted the offer and actually thought it was a sign of good luck. Who offers you a job on the start of a new year? I don't regret it a bit. Teaching here was a completely different experience. The girls in this studio were older, which meant the structure of the class had to be different. I wish I could've stayed here a bit longer.
In both studios, I met students and people that inspired me every single day. I am so aware now that taking a class and giving a class are two completely different things. You learn more by giving than by taking, and usually, that's how life works. This experience became a lifestyle in which you require some extra special skills like being a costume designer, your students' best friend, and even a DJ (because someone had to put all the songs together). I will always be grateful for the people I met along the way. It's sad it ends but new things are coming and I'm excited to see what happens next. This experience will remain in my heart forever.
